Since August of 2008, Tom has provided contract-based CFO and transaction advisory services on behalf of Scale Finance LLC (Research Triangle Park area of North Carolina) to multiple clients in various industries including biotech, medical device, health care services, and molecular diagnostics, among others. He is the firm's lead life sciences partner and was named a 'Top CFO' in the Triangle by Business Leader Media in 2010 and named a finalist for the Triangle Business Journal's 'CFO of the Year' in 2012.
Immediately prior to joining Scale Finance, Tom was Executive VP & CFO for BioSignia, Inc., where he served as an integral part of the executive management team during the entrepreneurial formation, R&D, product development and validation, and initial commercialization cycles of this healthcare information technology company. He personally guided the company through its development stage capital formation process, including numerous rounds of capital aggregating in excess of $47 million. Tom played a central role in the company's strategic development, serving as the principal negotiator in its relationships with key strategic partners and assuming the lead role in development of deal structures and contract terms for major customer relationships.
Earlier in his career, Tom served as VP of Finance & CFO for First Carolina Communications and was an integral part of a five man management team in an entrepreneurial, transaction intensive environment with this management company which specialized in the development and operation of cable TV systems in numerous states across the country. He successfully guided the company through the registration and filing process for an initial public offering of debt securities underwritten by Morgan Stanley. During his tenure, the company consummated transactions, including acquisitions, divestitures, and financings aggregating in excess of $1 billion.
Tom began his professional career as an auditor with Price Waterhouse where he served multiple clients (public and private) in a variety of industries and achieved the position of Senior Audit Manager. He received his BS in Accounting & Finance from Auburn University with 'High Honors.' Tom is a member of the American Institute of CPA's (AICPA) and the North Carolina Association of CPS's (NCACPA).
