From 2005 to 2012, Dr. Cleary was the Vice President of Manufacturing for Pharmasset Inc. The majority of Dr. Cleary's efforts were focused upon the pharmaceutical development of the Hepatitis C drug GS-7977 (Sofosbuvir), where his responsibilities included site selection, contract & timeline negotiations and subsequent oversight & management of the production of rapidly increasing quantities of all cGMP intermediates, API and final dosage forms.

From 2001 to 2005, Dr. Cleary owned and operated a successful consulting business providing services to the pharmaceutical industry including; sourcing, chain-supply development and expansion, chemical development, process optimization & scale-up and formulations development.

From 1996 to 2001, Dr. Cleary was employed by Triangle Pharmaceuticals as a Senior Chemist. In the early years, he worked on & contributed to the chemical development of Emtricitibine, Amdoxovir & Coactinon anti-virals. In the later years he expanded into supply chain development and outsourcing.

Dr. Cleary's first job in the pharmaceutical industry was as a medicinal chemist for Burroughs Wellcome where he worked on the synthesis of novel anti-viral compounds.

Dr. Cleary earned his Ph.D. in 1985 from the University of South Carolina. He studied and worked in the research group of Professor James Marshall and his dissertation included the synthesis of Asperdiol; a 14-membered ring containing Cembrane natural product.
